Staff
What about the staff?

The teachers are specially trained to guide the children, to carefully and regularly observe so as to introduce new learning opportunities for each individual child at the right moment.  Our teachers are fully aware that they are role models for the children in their care - they work long hours both preparing the classroom activities and their own personal development. All teachers participate in our weekly in house training on Steiner education. We also meet as a school twice weekly to plan and discuss the program and the individual children in our groups. In addition, each group meets  daily to plan and review the daily activities.

The low child/teacher ratio  allow us to give plenty of individual attention.  We never push but act as a loving guide and supporter, encouraging and directing to enable the whole development of the child to flourish.  As carers of the children, the staff also engage in purposeful activities, involving care of the rooms, preparation of food, and the making of decorations to correspond with the seasons and the festivals.  The children naturally wish to be part of these activities, much as they would at home, and thus freely engage in practical life skills and individual creativity - a sound basis for all future learning.

As Highgate House is an international school in Hong Kong,  English is the main language used for all daily activities and for interaction with the children. The staff are from a variety of cultural backgrounds, reflecting the international society of Hong Kong. The main teacher is a native English speaker. Native speakers of  Cantonese and Mandarin assist the main teacher. Each day the Mandarin teacher visits the nursery and kindergarten for a fixed session to let the children absorb this language through selected music, stories and group activities. This is very good for the children's overall development and connects the environment in which they live with their educational experience in school.  We also offer extended day  Mandarin in our afternoon Mandarin kindergarten session.
